On the path to the river, about a quarter of the way down, is the overhead web of a gorgeous Golden silk orb-weaver female spider (Nephilia clavipes). She has been growing quickly (and eating her suitors) and will soon lay her eggs. I am quite fond of these spiders, and I'm glad that our backyard provides them a safe habitat. Their webs are fascinating- the color helps attract and catch some insect prey, and has the breaking stress strength of 710–1200. See table for comparisons.
