There are places further upstream on the Hillsborough River where you can go out in a small boat (I usually use a canoe) and see lots of adults during mating season. You do need to be careful, they are very dangerous when big and looking for a mate, but you can get pretty close. It's not quite as dangerous as it sounds- it is extremely rare for an alligator to approach and attack a boat, usually when young people are being foolish, but still rare. They are no longer endangered, the population has rebounded, and they are all over in fresh water ponds, rivers and lakes.Catherine L.
